CONDE NAST TRAVELER MAGAZINE CALLS LONG ISLAND, “PERFECTION … WITH MILES OF UNSPOILED COASTLINE, 80-MILE LONG ISLAND IS AN OFF-THE-GRID ESCAPE FOR THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO STRAY TOO FAR FROM CIVILIZATION.”
Long Island, divided by the Tropic of Cancer, is perhaps one of the most dramatic islands in the Bahamas. The island boasts bold headlands and towering cliffs above crashing waves on the Atlantic coast and warm tranquil, impossibly clear turquoise waters on the leeward side of the Exuma sound. Looking for Long Island houses for sale? Look no further.
Cape Santa Maria Beach is located on the leeward side of the island (Exuma Sound), near the northern tip of the island. The beach is 4 miles of gently curving shimmering, powdery white sand with the occasional patch of ironshore. Christopher Columbus is said to have made his second landfall in the new world here and proclaimed it to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. He promptly changed the name of the island from its original Yuma, to Fernandina in honor of his patron Queen.
The practical Bahamians changed the name to Long Island, well … because it is. The 4000 or so locals on the island are known for their warmth and propensity to live in the moment.
LONG ISLAND IS AN UNPARALLELED DELIGHT, AND HAS THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE BAHAMAS. AN UNBEATABLE COMBINATION.
